While we were dating, we attended a lot of sporting events. Anne would always buy Cracker Jacks and, as she was opening the box, she’d say, “You know, if there’s a ring inside the toy surprise pack that means we’re engaged.” My response was invariably, “Yeah, right!”
At Shea Stadium one day, I went on a food run, coming back with the usual junk and Cracker Jacks. What she didn’t know was I had previously purchase the Cracker Jacks, slit the box open with a razor blade, and jazzed up the “Surprize Pack”! As she opened the Cracker Jacks, she said her standard, “If there’s a ring inside…” When she pulled out the “toy surprise” package, inside was a note with the words “Marry Me?” written on it along with a diamond ring! You should have seen the run on the food stands after THAT!
A year later we were married, and of course the favors at our wedding were none other than packs of Cracker Jacks!
