This past January, the two of us (Megan and Jared) were discussing going to Florida over Spring Break with her family. One day she told me that she had a dream that I proposed to her on the beach while we were in Florida. About two weeks later, we decided to go with her family. I had been thinking a good time to propose but wanted it to be perfect and this opened the door for me. I asked her dad the day they left for Florida. I told Meg that I wanted just the two of us to go out one night while we were there. That Friday night, April 4, 2008, we rode the trolley to a restaurant called the Daiquiri Deck to eat. Then We rode back to the beach to watch the sunset. We watched it and then went for a walk on the beach. I told her how much she meant to me and that there was no other place I would rather be at that moment. I then got down on one knee, in the sand, and asked her to marry me. She froze, cried and then said yes. She said she was not expecting it to happen in Florida but was glad that it happened. She loved the ring and every aspect of the evening. I couldn’t of asked for a better night. The story has already been repeated several times by both of us to friends begging for the details.

I’m not saying that I know any more about love and marriage than anyone else. However, when someone asks me what my greatest idea was, only one comes to mind – my family.

It all started when I was trying to get votes. Not for myself, but for Atlanta mayoral candidate Maynard Jackson. My firm had been hired to help him win the election.

Maynard Jackson’s campaign for mayor of Atlanta was a victory, too. The new mayor was incredibly gracious and thankful. He said to me, “Should I ever be able to help you, just let me know.”

Now it was time to propose, so I called him. And I also called the Japanese firm that owned Atlanta’s tallest building, the IBM tower. And I called CBS, and I called the caterers, and I called in three producers from my agency.

Just before the six o’clock news, Cynthia received a message from her news director that a white-collar drug bust was about to go down in the penthouse of the IBM tower in midtown Atlanta. The police chief had been told to give Cynthia Good the exclusive story. The news director told her it would be the lead story, live, and that she should hightail it down to the tower to get the story.

Leading two camera trucks, Cynthia Good raced to the intersection of Peachtree and 14th Street where she witnessed some twenty police cars surrounding the building, a SWAT team and a fire truck (I couldn’t swing the chopper).

Cynthia demanded to be let into the building. She was told, “Sorry, ma’am, no one goes in. This is a very dangerous situation.” But Cynthia persevered and finally prevailed. Except for one last catch: a Red Dog SWAT team would have to escort her to the fiftieth floor, which it did. Once there, they broke down the door.

Behind it, she found not a Columbian drug cartel, but a knight of sorts – me – and dinner, champagne and musicians playing as the sun sank behind the picture windows, and I sank to my knees. She sank, too. And we’ve been afloat for 17 beautiful years!

After a round of bowling in our favorite bowling alley (where we had our first date four and a half months earlier) Jamie took me upstairs to play some video games. After a few minutes and 5 quarters, Jamie slapped a twenty in my hand and asked me to go back downstairs to ask the girl at the front desk to rent another lane for some more bowling. I went but the girl said it would be an hour wait. By the time I got back upstairs, Jamie was nowhere to be found! I walked a few feet and came to the door of a little private lounge on a balcony overlooking the bowling lanes below. Jamie had changed into a tuxedo, which he had hidden in his bowling bag. He was down on one knee with a scrabble board in his hands which said “will you marry me Sara”. He asked me aloud when I finally managed a “yes” through my discomposed tears. He then placed the most beautiful ring on my left finger and a kiss that I’ll never forget.

Throughout our 3 years of dating, my fiancée would always talk about her favorite movie “Anne of Green Gables.” There is a particular scene in the movie where the girl, Anne, and the guy, Gilbert, confess their love for one another on their favorite spot, the old wooden bridge. As I was thinking about how I should propose, I decided to research this old bridge. Most the movie series of Anne of Green Gables was filmed in Prince Edward Island in Canada. Although after researching more I discovered that the bridge was actually located right outside of Toronto. So it happened that she, my fiancée now, happened to be traveling to that area for a research project in Dec. So I decided to make a trip out of it. I called up two best friends of ours who happened to be dating at the time and ask them to come along and take pictures from a distance and film the event. We all met in Niagara Falls then took a day trip up to Toronto for the day. We bypassed Toronto secretly and ended up in the small town of Gormley where the bridge was located. We slowly drove down the old highway and suddenly there it was the old bridge off of the road into the woods. I pulled over, all of us got out of the car and begin our walk to the bridge. As we were walking to bridge, she begins to notice that is was exact bridge from the movie. We made our a way to center of the bridge. I explain to her how much I love her, quoted her favorite line the movie, and then drop down on one knee pulled out the ring and ask her to marry me. The entire event was a success and we are getting married on June 21st.

SO. Here’s how it went down:

I usually wake up before 5am and am out the door before 6 am to go to work. Gellian supposedly leaves around 7 for work, so I figured I could drive off, then sneak back into the house and surprise her.

iIgot a fog machine, dancing disco lights, had my old busted up guitar fixed, and borrowed some Elvis. Funny thing, that song. I was looking up one song, but somehow this other Elvis song showed up. I never heard of it before, but it listed the chord progression and lyrics. I made up my own melody, and used a capo higher than normal because I have a weakling voice.

So after Ronny helped me set up and left, I sat around downstairs waiting. I thought she left for 7 to go to work, but it was 7:10 and it was getting bright outside. I was afraid that the sunlight would kill the special effects. so, I called her up pretending to be at work, and told her I left the toaster oven on because I was warming it up for Poptarts I never put in.

I heard her get up and walk to the bedroom doors, so I let the fog machine loose all over the foyer. When the doors opened, I hit the two big disco lights, the music (Goldfinger - more today than yesterday), and started dancing the dancing like a fool all over the place haha!

So she came down the stairs and we danced to the music. Then I cut the music and whipped out the guitar. I sang my song about how I felt, and then busted out the ring. I popped the question and put it on her hand. Then I realized I forgot to say the speech, so I took it back off and then got down on one knee. Then I didn’t remember what the speech was, so I put it back on her finger and punched the music back on.

We stood around for a bit, smelled the flowers, and posed for some pictures.

And that’s how it went down.

I met my girlfriend when I worked at the hospital and she was working in the gift shop. I went away to med school and she finished college and was trying for a long time to get a pharmaceutical sales job. She applied to so many positions that she forgot which ones she had applied to. I had a friend call her posing as a pharmaceutical sales rep who would be at the hospital and wanted to interview her. The “interview” was to be on Feb 15th, 2008 at the hospital where we met, University Hospital in Augusta, GA. She was supposed to come up and see me in Columbia that night so she had no idea that I was coming. She prepared all week for a job opening that was an actual open position I had found on the Internet. Just before the “interview,” I had my friend call her to say she was running a little late, and could she meet her in a conference room on the other side of the hospital. When she walked into the room I walked through the door on the other side of the room dressed up with a dozen roses and a ring. The room was so large that she thought I was a doctor walking through before she realized who it was. She was a mix of anger and relief as I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. I almost thought she would say no and it took a couple of times of asking her before she cleared her head and said yes. I then took her by her parents’ house on the way to a nice dinner out.

It’s never been an issue of whether we’d get married but it was an issue of when. In previous conversations I told him that I like the song “Forever Young” by Rod Stewart and that I would like to find a way to include that in our wedding. So he rewrote the instrumentals and played it for me in my bedroom on our six year anniversary, March 1, 2008. He sang the words to me. He reached over just beyond me and pull the ring out from behind my pillow and asked me to marry him. It was very personal, emotional and perfect for us.

It was Thanksgiving morning and my then girlfriend was spending the holiday with me and my family. She had slept on my bed in my room while I slept on the couch downstairs and decided that it was time to go and wake her up. I went in and began making small talk with her as I prepared to pop the question. Eventually I began by asking her “Isn’t it going to be nice to be spending Thanksgiving with your boyfriend?” In all of her cuteness she smiled and said yes. Then I asked her “But don’t you think that it would be even nicer to be spending it with your fiancé?” Now usually this is where she would smile and start to cry with joy, and she did that, however, no sooner than I got out the words “will you marry me?” I did the unthinkable. I farted. It was totally unexpected, I did not feel it coming at all and I was embarrassed to say the least. Thankfully she looked passed that minor incident and said yes. We married a year and a half later and have spent six wonderful years together so far in addition to expecting our first child in October.
